Houston-based intellectual property boutique Sutton McAughan Deaver PLLC has again been named one of the country's "Best Law Firms" by U.S. News & World Report and The Best Lawyers in America, a publication by Woodward White, Inc.
SMD was listed as "Tier 1" in Houston for IP Litigation, Patent Litigation, Patent Law, and Copyright Law. On a national stage, SMD was listed in "Tier 3" of National law firms for these same four specialties.
This is the fifth time in as many years since its founding in February 2012 that Sutton McAughan Deaver PLLC has been recognized by U.S. News – Best Law Firms.
"We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish in our first five years as a firm," said partner Mike Sutton. "We believe that the recognition by U.S. News & World Report and The Best Lawyers of our regional and national success validates our vision in creating our firm—that a focused group of highly-skilled and experienced IP attorneys can provide clients with exceptional legal representation from a small, focused platform that is completely dedicated to intellectual property law."
According to a U.S. News & World Report press release, "The 2017 rankings are based on the highest number of participating firms and highest number of client ballots on record. To be eligible for a ranking, a firm must have a lawyer listed in The Best Lawyers in America, which recognizes the top 4 percent of practicing attorneys in the U.S. Over 10,000 attorneys provided more than 800,000 law firm assessments, and over 10,000 clients provided more than 90,000 evaluations."
All five of the partners at SMD are listed in The Best Lawyers in America.
Regarding its rating system, U.S. News & World Report states: "Receiving a tier designation reflects the high level of respect a firm has earned among other leading lawyers and clients in the same communities and the same practice areas for their abilities, their professionalism and their integrity."
