In its "Weekly Verdict" summary of legal high points and low points, Law360 (a publication of Portfolio Media, Inc.) highlighted Sutton McAughan Deaver PLLC as a "Legal Lion" for its work for the University of Houston. Elizabeth King, Al Deaver, Bob McAughan, and Jeff Andrews of SMD, with Tony Buzbee of The Buzbee Law Firm, obtained a ruling from Judge Ellison in Federal Court in Houston that South Texas College of Law new name, "Houston College of Law," was confusingly similar the the University of Houston's trademarks and South Texas College of Law would have to discontinue use of the new name.
According to Law360, '[i]n a show of legal prowess on Oct. 14, attorneys at The Buzbee Law Firm and Sutton McAughan Deaver PLLC won a favorable decision by a federal judge in a trademark fight between their client . . . and the recently renamed Houston College of Law, ordering the rival to temporarily change its name. . . ."
